Crawlspaces
Maybe your basement is not designed to be used as living space because of little or no headroom. But you are tired of the dirt dungeon with all of the creepy crawlies and the musty smell in your home that comes from an unfinished, dirt floor crawlspace. Properly sealing the crawlspace off from the rest of your home will make a considerable difference in the living environment above. Not only will it reduce or eliminate the uncomfortable effects associated with an unfinished crawlspace but in many cases you will greatly reduce or put an end to the harmful effects of Radon .
Radon
Radon is a colorless odorless gas that is emitted from the ground and is present in almost all homes in Minnesota. A vast majority of the homes with Radon test above the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommended levels for Radon. Radon is a known cause of lung cancer; because of this fact it is now mandated that all new home construction in Minnesota take steps to mitigate Radon levels.

EPA Recommends
- Test your home for radon even if you have a new home – it’s easy and inexpensive.
- Fix your home if your radon level is 4 picocuries per liter, or pCi/L, or higher.
- Radon levels less than 4 pCi/L still pose a risk, and in many cases may be reduced.
Radon is estimated to cause thousands of lung cancer deaths in the U.S. each year.
* Radon is estimated to cause about 21,000 lung cancer deaths per year, according to EPA’s 2003 Assessment of Risks from Radon in Homes (EPA 402-R-03-003). The numbers of deaths from other causes are taken from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s 2005-2006 National Center for Injury Prevention and Control Report and 2006 National Safety Council Reports.
If you have a dirt floor crawlspace you can protect your family from Radon by installing a concrete floor with proper venting or poly encapsulation and venting. Encapsulation essentially wraps the interior of your crawlspace in a giant sealed plastic bag. This will seal off the musty smells emitted from the dirt and drastically improves your homes safety and air quality. For a basement or crawlspace which already has a concrete floor there are various types of venting systems which will usually solve the problem.
